CanSkate – Learn to Skate
Overview:
The CanSkate program is designed as a comprehensive introduction to skating for children and adults, offering a structured approach to learning essential skating skills. As Skate Canada’s flagship learn-to-skate program, CanSkate focuses on building strong foundational skills in a fun and supportive environment. The program is suitable for skaters of all ages, from young beginners to adults who are new to the sport.
Objectives:
- Skill Development: Teach fundamental skating skills such as balance, control, and movement on ice.
- Confidence Building: Develop self-confidence and comfort on the ice through progressive skill development.
-
Physical Fitness: Improve overall physical fitness, including strength, flexibility, and coordination.
-
Fun and Engagement: Ensure that learning to skate is enjoyable and engaging through creative and interactive methods.
-
Preparation for Advanced Levels: Provide a strong foundation for skaters to advance to more specialized programs such as figure skating or hockey.
Program Levels:
The CanSkate program is divided into distinct levels to accommodate different skill levels:
- Stage 1-6 (Children): These stages are aimed at progressively developing basic skating skills from beginner to advanced. Each stage includes specific skill sets and achievements that skaters work towards.
- Adult Skating Levels: Designed for adult beginners, this level focuses on learning skating skills at a comfortable pace and fostering a positive skating experience.
Requirements:
- Attire: Skaters should wear comfortable, warm clothing suitable for physical activity. For safety, a properly fitting CSA approved helmet is required for children.
- Skates: Participants should have well-fitted figure skates (with good support around the ankles) or hockey skates, depending on their focus. Skates should be in good condition and properly sharpened. We recommend starting in a hockey skate as they have the best support to learn in.
